Gounod’s opera contrasts the thirst for knowledge and the bewitching appeal of desire with the duality of good and evil. It tells the fascinating story of Faust, the tormented scholar who, in his quest for meaning and the absolute, makes a fateful pact with the dark forces personified by Mephistopheles. At the heart of this dramatic fresco, forbidden love and the quest for redemption mingle with the eternal challenges of the human soul. An invitation to (re)discover the timeless splendor of Gounod’s Faust, sublimated in a version cleverly condensed to make it accessible to all.
Charles Gounod’s Faust is one of the best-known French operas in the world. It was first performed in 1859, based on the play of the same name by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, with libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré.
